Ak-Chiy

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Ak-Chiy ("white needlegrass") is a village in the southern Moiynkum sands, about 105 kilometers west of Nurzhan, in the Northern Steppe planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 520 (2021 estimate).[1] It takes its name from the tall needlegrass (chiy, Achnatherum splendens) that covers the salt flats around it, which families use as winter grazing for sheep. Women in the village weave the stems into patterned chiy screens, which are used as yurt walls and sold to craft shops in Nurzhan.[2]
