Layla Tursynova (born 1972) is an Iradi textile artist who weaves tapestries in hand-dyed wool. Born in Almaty to a family that left the Talas valley in 1916, she moved to Talas in 1998 and learned to weave from the women's cooperatives of the Autonomous Tribal Regions. Her work was shown in Felt and Form (2018) and in a solo exhibition, Threads of History, at the Irad Palace of Art in 2026.[1]

Work

She weaves on a horizontal loom in wool dyed with madder, walnut and indigo, and leaves parts of some pieces as bare warp. Threads of History (2024), a frieze 4.2 metres long, shows horsemen, a church and refugees crossing the mountains.[1]
