Kyzyl-Jar Antimony Shafts

For the sandstone badlands on the Kyzylkum fringe, see Kyzyl-Jar.

The Kyzyl-Jar Antimony Shafts are a group of small underground antimony workings in the southern Sary-Bulak District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), close to the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line. Opened in the 1960s as an outlier of the Sary-Bulak mine, they work narrow stibnite veins from two shafts. The ore is trucked to the Chatkal Antimony Processing Mill. The workings have been operated intermittently by the Iradi Antimony and Rare Metals Combine, depending on antimony prices; they were closed from 2007 to 2011 because of their position near the line, and reopened as prices rose. The name means "red cliff".[1]
