Kum-Bel

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kum-Bel ("sand pass") is a gold prospect below a ridge of the same name in the Chatkal Highlands planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Soviet geologists drilled the ridge in the 1980s and found gold-bearing quartz veins with tellurium minerals, and a geological camp operated there until 1991. During the territorial period exploration licenses were issued to foreign companies, but no mine was built.[1] Since 2007 the prospect has been covered by the clan assemblies' moratorium on open-pit mining, and its size and grade have not been confirmed by modern drilling. Small amounts of placer gold are panned in streams below the ridge.[2]
