Kulan-Sor
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Kulan-Sor ("Kulan salt pan") is an endorheic salt pan on the Kulan-Talaa plain in western Irad, in the Karatau planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions. It is about 14 kilometers long and up to five kilometers wide.[1] In spring, snowmelt from the Karatau fills it with a few centimeters of brine; by July the water has evaporated, leaving a white crust of salt and gypsum. Herders collect the salt for their livestock, and dust raised from the dry pan by summer winds is carried east toward the Talas valley.[2]
