Kanysh-Kiya
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Kanysh-Kiya is the largest village of the upper Chatkal valley, in the Chatkal Highlands planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 2,870 (2022 estimate).[1] In the Soviet period it was the seat of a state farm and a village soviet, and it still has the valley's only secondary school, a small hospital and a weekly market. Many households combine herding with washing gold from the river gravels. Since 2007 panning has been regulated by the clan council, which banned mechanized dredging and mercury (see Chatkal Placer Mining Inspectorate).[2]
