Jolchu (Song)
"Jolchu" ("Wayfarer") is a song by the Iradi duo tüntolk, the title track and fifth track of their debut album Jolchu (1999). It is the album's only love song.[1]
Music
The song rests on a tom-heavy drum-machine pattern that hardly changes, a shimmering Polivoks arpeggio and a single bass-guitar figure played by Askar Daniyarov. Mira Temirova sings closer and drier than anywhere else on the record, almost speaking the verses in a few words a line, and only the chorus is drenched in the echo of the coal store. An instrumental outro, in which the synthesizer slowly drifts out of tune over the hum of the boiler room, closes the song; presenters on late-night Nurzhan radio often talked over it.[1]
Themes
A woman speaks to a wayfarer who will saddle his horse at dawn and leave. Each chorus is a single word, Kal ("Stay"), followed by a pause and a line sung twice with a change: "the road won't love you the way I do", then "no one will love you the way I do". In the bridge she promises to wait. Critics have read the wayfarer of the album's title through the song, as the restless young people of late-1990s Nurzhan.[1][2]
