Fatima Asanova
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Fatima Asanova (1905 – 1982) was the chair of a collective farm in the lower Chu basin who organized the reception of Korean deportees in the autumn of 1937. When several trainloads of Koryo-saram families from the Russian Far East were unloaded at Kobozev with little food or shelter, she arranged for them to be housed in villagers' homes, barns and dugouts on her farm and the neighboring farms through the first winter.[1] Koryo-saram community histories credit her with reducing deaths among the deportees that winter, and a street in the Navbahor District of Nurzhan was named after her in 2007 (see Koryo-saram in Irad).[2]
