Eski-Aryk
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Eski-Aryk ("old canal") is an irrigation canal about 19 kilometers long in the Chu District of the Irad Special Economic Zone, west of Nurzhan. Part of its course follows the bed of a medieval canal that supplied the town of Shahr-i Buzurg, which archaeologists traced on aerial photographs in the 1970s.[1] The canal was cleared and lined in the 1950s as a branch of the Chu Irrigation Canal System, and sluice gates along it distribute water to the fields of Shaar-Döbö, about 4 kilometers north of its upper course, and of the farms farther west.[2]
