Diz-i Zard

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Diz-i Zard ("yellow citadel") is an archaeological site and ruined fort in the lower Chu valley, in the Chu District of the Irad Special Economic Zone. Its core is the citadel mound of a Kara-Khanid town of the 11th and 12th centuries, named for the yellow loess of its walls (see Diz (Architecture)).[1] In the 1820s the Khanate of Kokand built a small mudbrick fort on the mound as one of its strongholds on the Chu, to control the caravan and livestock routes and collect duties from traders. Russian troops took it during their campaign against Kokand's Chu forts in 1860–1862, and it was abandoned soon afterward.[2]
