Shire (Leathercraft)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Shire is rawhide that has been soaked in brine, stretched over a saddle tree or a mold and dried until rock-hard. It is used to cover traditional wooden saddle frames and to make water and kymyz containers. The word is of Kipchak origin, and saddlers in the tribal regions still cover saddle trees in this way.
