Lyudmila Ivanova

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Lyudmila Ivanova (1934 – 2011) was a Russian-language novelist from Kobozev (now Nurzhan). Her best-known novel, The Steppe on Fire (Russian: Степь в огне, 1971), follows a Russian settler family and an Iradi herding family through the 1916 revolt and its suppression.[1] Published in Moscow, it was one of the first Soviet novels to describe the killing and flight of the rebels in 1916, although censors softened its account of the punitive expeditions. Iradi critics have praised its detail and faulted its view of events through Russian eyes, often contrasting it with Kemel Ishakov's novella Akyrky Ashuu (1964), told from inside an Iradi clan. She taught literature in Kobozev and stayed in Nurzhan after 1992.[2]
