Kalyk Asanov

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kalyk Asanov (c. 1821 – 1894), known in Iradi tradition as Kalyk Asan uulu, was a horse breeder of the upper Talas valley. Under Kokand rule he supplied riding and racing horses to the khan's governors in the Talas valley, and after the Russian conquest of 1876 he sold remounts to Cossack units and to Russian officers of the Syr Darya province, whose purchase registers record him under the Russian form of his name.[1] Folk ballads name him as the owner of the racehorse Torukashka, and breeders of the Akyel count him among the herders who kept the Akyel type through the 19th century, a claim that rests on oral genealogies rather than written studbooks.[2]
