Eer (film)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Eer (Iradi, "saddle"; English title The Saddle; Russian: Седло) is a 1982 Soviet drama film directed by Nurlan Sadikov for Talasfilm Studios, made between Desert Sun’s Rebellion (1979) and his last film, Visions of Irad (1984). An old saddler in the old town of Talas works on one last saddle, decorated in silver in the old manner, while his son prepares to leave for the oil fields of Kobozev (now Nurzhan). Most of the parts are played by working saddlers, and much of the film is given to the making of the saddle, shown in long takes with little dialogue.[1]

After the success of Desert Sun's Rebellion the studio had hoped for a second Eastern, and it gave Eer only a small release. Reviewers respected it, but it found little audience. Later critics have seen in its patient, observed scenes the beginning of the documentary style of Visions of Irad, and the restored film is a source for historians of Talas saddlery.[2]
