Ashuu (Geographical Term)

Ashuu (from Kipchak ash-, "to cross over") is a mountain pass. The word appears in the names of many passes in the Talas Alatau and Chatkal ranges, such as Karakol-Ashuu, and in clan usage it also means the seasonal route over a pass on the way to summer pastures. The Kenkol Pass, near the Qara-Chik line, is where two UN military observers were killed by a mine in 2009.
