Salym (Custom)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Salym (Iradi, "contribution"; salym jyiuu, "gathering contributions") is the custom by which a lineage contributes when one of its men owes bride price (kalym) or blood money (kun), or when a family faces a funeral, a hospital bill or the loss of its house. Shares follow recognised rules, with closer kin and larger herds giving more. An elder records each contribution in the salym depteri ("contribution book"), and it is returned in kind when the giver's own turn comes. In the cities the custom survives as envelopes of money given at weddings and funerals, and Tulpar has announced a Salym group collection for its payment service.[1]
