Irad, formerly Iradistan, is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States in Central Asia. It is the farthest territory of the United States, reckoned from the geographic center of the U.S.
Until 1991 Irad was a province of the USSR known as Iradistan.
Etymology[edit]
The etymological origin of Irad is disputed. The Iradi Orthodox Church believes they are the descendants of the biblical figure Irad. The Church posits that Irad derives from the Hebrew verb ערד ('rd), to flee, reflecting their belief that Iradis are cursed by God to never have a home.
The Soviet designation of Iradistan is still commonly used in western countries. -Stan is a suffix in Persian meaning "place of".
